Do you have an extra day before or after a safari in Tanzania? Or do you simply have a day in Morogoro to fill while waiting for a transfer in or out of town? A hike in the Ulurgu Mountains to Choma Waterfall or all the way to Lupanga Peak (2150m above sea level) is a great way to spend the day!

This is more of a walk through villages on a steep dirt trail, than it is a true “hike” through treacherous terrain. One of our experienced local guides from Safaris Partners, Tony, took our two guests from the United States, Cale and Chelsea on a tour through the Uluguru Mountains to Choma Waterfall.

Starting the five hour journey in the morning, we make our way through small villages filled with friendly people exchanging greetings in the local language, Swahili; “mambo”(hello), responding with “poa”(cool) and “safi” (fresh/in-order).

Experiencing the Uluguru Mountains with Safaris Partners you get a chance to learn about the history, local tribes, fresh produce, wildlife, and the resources used from the mountain. Streams from the mountain join to create the Ruvu River, which is a large water source for Dar es Salaam. The people from the Waluguru tribe have lived throughout the mountains for hundreds of years.

As we walk through the villages, the local people offer you the freshest produce directly from the garden or farm to taste and/or buy. Morogoro and the Uluguru Mountains is one of the largest suppliers of the best fruits and vegetables for all of Tanzania! You see a wide variety of produce along the way of strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, dragon fruit, avocado, bananas, and much more. When they offer, you must taste the raspberries. The berries are so fresh and sweet they make you cringe(in a good way)!

Once you are starting to get tired and wonder if you are at the top after winding through all the farms and villages, you begin to hear the crash of the water crashing from Choma! Finally we zig zag down a small trail to the base of the waterfall. After a long, hot two hour journey, you get the chance to cool down in the fresh water of Kinole Waterfall. Enjoy some delicious snacks you got on the way up or supplied by Safaris Partners. You will also have the chance to buy locally made paintings, bracelets or more fresh fruits while relaxing before your journey back down the mountain.

Once you are finished at the waterfall, we will wind back through the same villages giving you the chance to buy any fresh fruits you passed on the way up. As you head down the mountain you have a beautiful view overlooking the city of Morogoro throughout the entire descent. An easy one to one and a half hour walk down gives you plenty of time to enjoy an afternoon snack once you get into town. Try a local favorite of chips mayai, you will not be disappointed!
